Sam Njoma, the first independent president of Namibia, died in the capital Windhoek at the age of 95, the current leader announced.

Njoma led a long battle for independence from South Africa in 1990 after discovering the Namibian liberation movement known as the Southwest People’s Organization (SWAPO) in the 1960s.

After independence, Njoma became president in 1990 and led the country until 2005.
